Sngg and Sims Beckwith sn proper o join a se cret order and to take horrid oaths which they promise not to divulge, and Jhcn perjure Ihem relvcs hy divulging them, what is it all to .Mr. HolJeu and his friends? Mr. Holden belongs to cq secret order, and knows of the existence of none. The Destructives and Secessionists are ensasred in all manner of conspiracie5,9py systems, intrigue and corruption, and we are not surprise J that some of them should take, horrid oaths and then break them. ' ' "Chatham county will vote for Mr. Holden by .at least two to one, though sign?, and visions and wonders should continue to appear. Progress." The purpose of this is evidently, to screen the - 'members of the treasonable association, who, ac cording to Rev. 0, Ghurchbill, (" owe O. Church hill '')' were expected to vote for Mr. Holden." .TheKSlandard is full of electioneering stuff, abuse of Gov. Vance, columnious charges against him and his friends, ridiculous stories about the votes that Mr. Holden will get in August and h'is cer tainty of being elected; but it cannot devote a thought to tho grayest charge ever made in North Carolina, no Ies than that his . friends weie en gaged in a treasonable secret conspiracy a con spiracy to overthrow the Confederate government and takB-North Carolina bick into union with the hated band of robbers and abolitionists and mur derers who are desolating our country. . The con cause tne conviction that their Editors were well aware of the existence of this seeret association, and the absence of a word of condemnation would indicate that they approved of it. Will any cue belieye, that such a notice as the above is all that those papers would hae contained if they bad not known that the facts stated byMr. Churchhid and the other five persons were true? They would . have deuied, if they had dared, for they well know haw .damaging such a disclosure must be to the prospeets of Mr. "Holden. 'ino mass ur mc pie of North Carolina are not traitors themselves, nor prepared to tolerate treason in others, or to elevate to the 'Gubernatorial chair thecandidato of . traitors. The article of the Irogre$s, therefore, ' thus copied into the Standard, can only be re ' gardedasan adroission'.of the truth of the state ment of Messrs. Churchhill, HolUnd and others. It will cot do for the Standard to say mat, tne .Rev. Mr.. Chnrchhill and the others, 'l$g&aT& thi3 treason aolo conspiracy. A man ean only commit pe jury when a lawful oath is adminis tered, in eome judicial proceeding, to a person who swears wilfully, absolutely and iaUely, in amatter material to the isue or point of question. See . BlackMone, 4th book, 10th ch., 1 6th part. The same authority goes on to lay down the law that other oaths, (such as. that administered by the treasonable association,) are "unnecessary at Itast," and therefore not peijury. And moreover, if we " tniatake not, it is not only not peijury for a man to rereana matter which he had beea unlawfully sworn to conceal,' but it is laid down as a duty of a citizco to make sncb revelation in cases where thATnhlio nafetV reonires it.
